Margaret "Maggie" A. Mason

Margaret "Maggie" Mason, age 79, passed away on August 13, 2019 in Geneva.  Born April 20, 1940 in Painesville, the daughter of George and Florence (Fisher) Konicek. "Maggie" was a rural carrier in Lake County for the Plain Dealer and retired from Sam's Club in Mentor.  She enjoyed reading, knitting and crocheting, camping and loved long trips on the spur of the moment.

James J. Braat, age 81, of Geneva, passed away August 9, 2019, at his home with loving family by his side.  Born June 9, 1938 in Cleveland, Ohio,  the son of William & Barbara (Vargo) Braat.  Married Susan (Spore) Braat on October 28, 1974, in Jefferson, Ohio.  James was a  maintenance mechanic at Millennium Chemical where he retired. A member of the V.F.W. Post# 6846; and the F.O.E. #2243. James enjoyed spending time with his family,  playing softball, horse racing, collecting baseball and football cards, and tinkering with bicycles.

Christopher D. Markgraf, age 53, of Madison, passed away August 9, 2019 at Hospice of the Western Reserve, Cleveland, with loving family by his side.  Born August 8, 1966, the son of Dennis C. & Grace (Hedrick) Markgraf.  Chris loved watching all of the Cleveland sports teams, playing his guitar and hanging with his close friends, and his beloved dog Emma.

Gay "Pops" A. Carper, age 83, of Ashtabula, passed away August 5, 2019 at his home.  Born on January 29, 1936 in Volga, West Virginia, the son of Ora C. & Letha M. (Casto) Carper.  "Pops" was a Coal Miner in West Virginia, and also worked at Rockwell International in Saybrook.  He enjoyed farming, and Gardening.

Marian M. Volpone, age 96 , of Geneva, passed away on August 1, 2019 at The Sanctuary of Geneva.  Born on June 29, 1923 in Geneva,  the daughter of Arthur and Anna (Bell-Yates) Gaines.  Marian and her husband August "Gus" recently celebrated 75 years of marriage on February 28, 2019.

Nicholas "Nick" E. Otto, age 31, of Willowick, passed away July 22, 2019 at Hillcrest Hospital, Mayfield.  Born May 15, 1988, in Geneva, Ohio.  The son of Susan R. (Rose) O'Leary & Eugene E. Otto.  A Project Engineer,  for Comfort Systems U.S.A., in Oakwood Village,  where he worked for 11 years.  Also worked at Men's Warehouse;  Woody's World;  and Geneva McDonald's.  Nick enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, motorcycle riding, target shooting, kraft beer, camping, hiking, bon fires, and canoeing.  He was a Best Man at several of his friends weddings.

Arlene McCracken  1934-2019

Surrounded by her loving family, Arlene McCracken, 85, was called to join the angels’ choir on Monday, 7/22/19. 

Married to the love of her life, Frank McCracken, for 65 years, she worked at Geneva Telephone Co. as a telephone operator prior to becoming a full-time mom.  She was a member of The United Church of Geneva, where she served as a Deaconess and member of the choir and bell choir.  She was also a member of the Geneva Community Choir.  She served her community volunteering at the local voting polls and for the American Red Cross, where she earned the 2008 Ashtabula Volunteer of the Year Award.

She enjoyed crocheting, ceramics, painting, gardening, traveling, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her loving and devoted husband, Frank; children, James (Karen) McCracken of Humble TX, Vonda (Keith) Pennell of Hudson, NH and Brenda Erwin of Ashtabula; grandchildren Faith, Allen, Amy, Kilee, Jason, Jenna and Lindsey; and great-grandchildren Kira, Cody, Kayla, Carla, Frayja, Russell and Thalia.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mose and Alice Whitaker and baby sister, Nadine.

Patricia I. Ratliff,  age 80, of Geneva, passed away July 21, 2019 at Geneva Village Nursing Home.   Born on November 28, 1938, in Willoughby, Ohio.  The daughter of Lysle K. & Elizabeth I. (Heidt) Higginbotham.  Worked as a Brazer at Mining Tools, in Mentor, she also was housekeeper at Madison Health Care.  Patricia enjoyed spending time with her family, shopping and doing word searches.

Howard K. Lahner   1921-2019

Howard K. Lahner, age 97, of Geneva, passed away July 19, 2019 at Gillette Nursing Home, in Warren.  Born December 14, 1921 in Green, Ohio, the son of John & Fannie Elizabeth (Reynolds) Lahner.   Served in the U.S. Army,  and worked for Rockwell International as a Machine Operator for 31 years. Howard is a previous member of the Ashtabula V.F.W. Post, and he enjoyed fishing.

Raymond L. Mundie, Jr.  1946-2019

Raymond L. Mundie, Jr., age 72, of Geneva, passed away July 16, 2019 at Rae Ann Suburban in Westlake, Ohio.  Born on October  9, 1946 in Cleveland.  The son of Raymond L. & Margaret A. (Peitzmeyer) Mundie, Sr.  Raymond attended Park Street Christian Church in Geneva.   Worked as a central supply clerk at U.H. Geneva Medical Center for 11 years.  He also worked at N. Madison Giant Eagle and Geneva Golden Dawn; was a cook at Chapman's Restaurant in Geneva; did maintenance at Grand River Academy  and at Nursing Homes.  He was a kind and caring man with a unique sense of humor, and was known as "MacGyver" for his ability to fix things.

Robert K. Foster, Sr.  1937-2019

Robert K. Foster, Sr., age 81,  of Geneva,  passed away July 8, 2019 at Geneva Shores Nursing Home.  Born Thursday, October 14, 1937, in Ashtabula, Ohio.  The Son of Wing M. & Eleanor E. (Hoskins) Foster.  An Assistant Manager for 21 years at Loblaws Grocery store in Saybrook & Ashtabula; also worked at Saybrook & Geneva True Temper for 8 years; Reliance Electric; Molded Fiberglass; and Carl's Food-grocery store; and Sines & Sons , in Perry.  Robert was a Sunday school teacher at First Assembly of God Church, in Ashtabula, also a Sunday school Superintendent at Grace Assembly Church, and an usher.  Attended the Painesville Assembly of God Church with his daughter Darlene.  He enjoyed spending time with his family and loved ones, fishing and roller skating.

Judy A. Sanchez, age 65, of Geneva, passed away July 5, 2019 at Rae-Ann Nursing Home.  Born October 6, 1953 in Grafton, West Virginia.  The daughter of Wanda Lee Marteny & LeRoy Cleavenger.   Judy was a homemaker, who enjoyed reading Nancy Drew books, watching soap opera's, cooking, and the Cleveland Indians.

Ray E. Kangas, age 53, of Ashtabula, passed away on June 20, 2019 at his home.  Born on September 24, 1965 in Ashtabula.   The son of Kalevi H. & Lilja A. (Konnteinen) Pahkakangas "Kangas".  A lifelong resident of Ashtabula. Ray was a Painter and a Welder for Air Sire, Ashtabula. He was a Cleveland Browns football fan, and he loved his children.

Mary S. Stokes, age 65, of Geneva, passed away June 28, 2019, at U.H. Geneva.  Born on December 8, 1953 in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Dorian & Ruth (Cherri) Dickman.  Mary worked at the Geneva Public Library, and a member of "Friends of Geneva Library."  She enjoyed reading, video games, traveling all of the Cleveland sports teams, and she loved horses.

Jerry E. Moore, Sr., age 90, of Geneva-on-the-Lake, passed away June 20, 2019 at U.H. Geauga Medical Center.

Born on October 7, 1928 in Cleveland,  the son of Howard & Virginia Moore.    A maintenance supervisor at Western Reserve University, Cleveland.  He served in the U.S. Army, and was a World War II Veteran.  A member of the Euclid Lodge #599 F & AM,  Shaker Heights; a 32 degree Mason;   member of the Scottish Rite,  Cleveland;  member of the York Rite, Lyndhurst;   member of the El Koran;  member of the American Legion Post #103, Ashtabula;  member of Geneva Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2243; and a member of Geneva V.F.W. Post #6846.  Jerry enjoyed hunting, fishing and Indy car racing.

Mary Lou Warner, age 88, of Ashtabula, passed away June 3, 2019 at A.C.M.C.  She was born October 4, 1930 in Geneva, to Walter L. and Mary G. (Langton) Jones.  Married Glenn E. Warner on February 12, 1955 in Ashtabula. 

Mary Lou enjoyed family get-togethers during the Holidays, camping, car rides, going to the casinos, and the Cleveland Indians.

John C. Thomas  1950-2019

John C. Thomas age 68 of Geneva, passed away on May 31, 2019 at Geauga Hospital. Born on September 22, 1950 in Geneva to John "Jack" and Pauline  (Darrow) Thomas.

John married Dawn M. (Patton) on September 4, 1971 in Geneva.

After 25 years,  John retired from  Ashtabula Molded Fiberglass Co. in 2012.  He was a life-member of the Geneva V.F.W. Post 6846 and a member of GAMBA (Geneva Band Boosters). John served our country as a SGT. in the U.S. Air Force.

His hobbies included spending time with his Grandchildren and friends; riding his motorcycle; traveling ; playing the guitar and ukulele.

Survivors: Wife, Dawn; Son, Paul (Susan) Thomas of Geneva; Daughter, Andrea Otte of North Canton;     3 Grandchildren:  Kaylee Thomas,  Brandon Thomas,  Emma Otte;  and  Sister, Janet Barbian of Ashtabula.

Helen L. Jarman, age 83, of Geneva passed away May 26, 2019 at U.H. Geneva.  She was born May 9, 1936 in Cleveland, to Swend A. and Helen M. (Guelker) Jenner.  Helen  worked for Kmart in Madison, and North Carolina;  Erb Cleaners;  Gary Allen Sports Wear; and a Manager at Isaly's in Geneva.  She enjoyed scrapbooking, quilting, making cards, watching Hallmark movies & John Wayne movies,  especially liked the movie "Pretty Woman," and was a Cleveland Cavs and Indians fan.

Jeffrey A. Morton  1960-2019

Jeffrey A. Morton, 58 of Geneva died peacefully at his home Tuesday, May 21, 2019.  He was born on August 21, 1960 the son of Donald and Norma (Lemponen) Morton-Keller.

Jeffrey graduated from Geneva High School and was a member of the Geneva Eagles Lodge #2243.  He was a roofer by trade and loved gardening, landscaping and loved growing roses.

Jeffrey also enjoyed golfing, playing pool, singing karaoke, and working on his motorcycle to get it ready for the summer rides.  He also enjoyed spending time with his friends and calling his sisters multiple times a day.

Jeffrey will be deeply missed by his siblings, Vickie (John) Cieslinski, Jim (Helena) Morton and Kathy Herpy;  niece and nephews, Brian (Shawn) Guthrie, Michael Guthrie, and Tianna and William Morton; great-niece and nephew, Elijah and Kendra Guthrie.

Jeffrey was preceded in death by parents.

A memorial service will be held, Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 3 PM at Walker Funeral Home, 828 Sherman St., Geneva where friends may gather from 1PM until time of services at 3PM. 

He will be inurned at Mechanicsville Cemetery with his parents at a later date.

Miller and Dennis P. Morell.  Traci was a self-employed Beautician, and a gourmet cook.  She enjoyed gardening herbs and flowers and her swimming pool.

Betty J. Rose  1923-2019

Betty J. Rose, age 95, passed away May 1, 2019 at The Sanctuary, Geneva.  She was born September 8, 1923 in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania, and lived 63 years in Geneva, Ohio. She graduated from Meadville High School, Meadville, PA in 1941. 

She was an active member of the United Church of Geneva where she served on many boards, committees and played in the Church Hand Bell Choir.  She served 22 years on the Senior Citizen Advisory Board, was a member and past president of the Geneva Friendly Garden Club, a member of Lake County Retirees, and Geneva Pace Exercise Group.

 Also a Girl Scout leader, neighborhood Girl Scout cookie chairman, a den mother for Cub Scouts, and played the drums with 'The Off Our Rockers Band'.

Along with her husband Carl, together, they served as foster parents in Ashtabula County for 13 years. 

Betty enjoyed spending time with her Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, camping with her family in the Allegheny Mountains in Pennsylvania. Her hobbies included quilting, flower arranging, sewing, making macrame chairs, and all types of crafts.  She loved to read, taking care of a large flower garden, feeding the birds, working in the yard, and playing with her dogs. Betty enjoyed playing dominoes & cards with her friends from church, and corn hole with her exercise group.

Antonia Oquendo, age 91, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2019 in Orlando, Fl.  Born August 28, 1927 in Puerto Rico to Pedro and Amalia (Lagares) Matias. 

Antonia was a housewife for most of her life, raising and loving her children.  She enjoyed cooking and gardening and worked outside of the home for a few years at Geneva Rubber.

Thomas W. Sadlock  1944-2019

Thomas W. Sadlock, age 75, of Madison, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2019 at University Hospital, Cleveland.  Born on February 9, 1944 in Cleveland, Ohio the son of George & Dorothy (Loomis) Sadlock.  Thomas served in the U.S. Army where he played in the Army band, and also a metal worker at Kimco Products, in Chardon.  He enjoyed playing the accordian and clarinet and liked polka music.

Richard "Rick" A. Schindler, age 74, of Geneva-on-the-Lake, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2019 at U.H. Geneva.  Born October 22, 1944 in Cleveland,  the son of Norman and Antoinette (Vargo) Schindler.


Rick loved God and his family.  Rick was an active member of A.A. where he was known as "Rick the Alcoholic,"  celebrating almost 31 years of sobriety.  He was always there to lend a helping hand whether it be for an A.A. member or someone in need of advice.

He was an avid golfer, enjoyed watching the Golf channel, his Cleveland teams, and was quick witted with his humor.

Rick worked as a Tool & Die Maker for G.E. for many years, and worked Home Alternatives before his retirement.

John Pasquarelli. She was a well respected real estate agent as well as a postal carrier for the

Geneva area post office and a member of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association.
